mix of wargame articles, two issue games, and two Mini-Sim games.
Besides the standard Panzerschreck columns, wargame articles
cover Down in Flames (GMT), Battle of the Atlantic (Minden), Richtho-
fen's War (AH), Great War at Sea (Avalanche), Togoland 1914 (Khyber),
Torpedo (Simulations Canada), Sacrifice in the East (Minden), London's
Burning (AH), plus a look at World War II Tactical Wargames by Norman
Smith. (See scans below.)
Battle for Bataan is a two-player regimental level wargame designed by James Meldrum. Its setting is the Bataan peninsula and Corregidor Island in the Philippines in early 1942. With no hope of resue, the US and Filipino forces on Bataan had no other choice that to hold out against incredible odds. The original defenders managed to hang on until May; could you do better? Battle for Bataan comes with one 8.5" x 11" map, approximately 100 unmounted color counters, seven scenarios, and rules. Special rules cover artillery, amphibious assaults, air support, the critical issue of supply, invading Corregidor, and more.
The second issue game is Escape of the Goeben, a two-player tactical World War I naval wargame designed by Gary Graber. It uses the Jellicoe vs Scheer game system introduced in Panzerschreck #6. The game includes the Mediterranean/Black Sea dreadnought fleets of France, Italy, Great Britain, Russia, Spain, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Turkey. A total of sixty-two 2.5" x .6" cardstock ship counters are included. Besides the ships and full rules of play, six scenarios round out the package. Among the scenarios are two involving the game's namesake, the Goeben, the German battlecrusier that evaded allied ships in the Mediterranean on its way to Turkish waters in 1914. When combined with Jellicoe vs Scheer, gamers can recreate most any major naval engagement (real or hypothetical) in the North Sea, Mediterranean, or Black Sea during the Great War. (Escape of the Goeben is a complete game; ownership of Jellico vs Scheer is not necessary for play.)
This issue also includes two Mini-Sims. La Bataille de York 1813 is a small solitaire game that covers the Battle of York (later, Toronto) that was fought on April 27, 1813, between defending British troops (the player) and invading Americans (the game system) during the War of 1812. Siege of Lenigrad is a small abstract solitaire game simulating the famous World War II siege, beginning in September 1941. Subtitled Logistics Module I, players are thrust into the role of managing the siege from inside the city, not an army general trying to relieve it. As with all Panzerschreck Mini-Sims, the rules and components of these two games are part of the magazine. Their playing pieces (boards and counters) will have to be photocopied, mounted and separated before play.
Panzerschreck #9 is 68 pages (plus game inserts) and includes the four games described above. You can order it directly from Minden Games.
